Testing DNS SRV Records with NSLookup

Related to the post just prior to this, I had to figure out how to test or "ping" the newly created SRV record and I found this blog post that showed me how:

" Office Communicator relies on Service Location (SRV) records in DNS for auto-configuration. Frequently you can't create the external DNS record yourself so you need to ask your ISP or DNS provider to do it for you.

So if the service provider is swearing black and blue that the records have been created correctly but your external client is not finding the server checking your DNS configuration is a great place to start."

Enables Outlook 2007 to use DNS Service Location (SRV) records to locate the Exchange Autodiscover service

Original Error:
Microsoft Exchange offline address book
Not downloading Offline address book files. A server (URL) could not be located.
0X8004010F

We just recently upgraded our DC to Win 2008 and also upgraded to Exchange 2007. With that, we've run into a small issue of the Offline Address Book (OAB) not being able to be found and it's giving a sync error every hour in outlook. We had to figure out a way to get the Autodiscover feature to work correctly and after about 3 hours of searching, here's the article that set us up correctly:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940881

It worked great for us as we couldn't use the standard DNS solution due to having only 1 IP and only being able to use 1 SSL certificate on that IP (I did try a wildcard SSL, but then the email sync broke while the Offline Address Book error went away), so setting up a SRV record worked great!

Here's a link that shows how to setup the SRV DNS entry in godaddy

T-Mobile Unlimited Loyalty Plan

So I logged into my tmobile account today and I see this message about a unlimited voice plan for $50. I've been with them since I left verizon years back and I have to say they are the best! I'm able to use my Iphone on their network and get internet too. They definitely don't get the shine they deserve and this loyalty plan is just one of the many ways they prove that they appreciate their customers unlike the other cell phone carriers...

Here's some details about it:

"Starting March 2nd, customers who have been with T-Mobile for more than 22 months with a reliable payment history are being offered the new plan when they log in to their T-Mobile accounts. The plans, which were piloted in San Francisco a mere 10 days ago, provide unlimited minutes on an individual line for $49.99/month and unlimited minutes on a two-line Family plan for $89.99/month. Additional lines (up to three) can also be added to the Family plan for $39.99 each. Add-on features such as unlimited data ($24.99), unlimited BlackBerry data ($34.99) and unlimited messaging ($9.99) can be added to each line on an a la carte basis. As an added bonus, customers who add a line and port in a new customer from a competitor will receive a $135 credit on their bill. Damn good show, T-Mobile — let’s see how the competition responds, or rather, if the competition responds…" whole story here

What makes a good content writer

For anyone looking to become a content writer, check this out:

"Web content is a newer form of writing that demands its own sets of rules and etiquette. A good website content writer will know how to write content so that a viewer will be able to read without becoming bored or clicking to another site. There are several rules that all of the best web content writers follow.

Sentences

Short and to the point. Good web content is direct without using any unnecessary words. This goes for paragraphs and even for words, too.

Reverse Pyramid

A good web content writer will put the most important information, or the conclusion, at the very beginning, grabbing a reader’s attention.

Word Choice

Simple, easy to understand words are the best to use. A good web content writer understands that people of all reading abilities browse the web, and to connect to as many readers as possible, the simplest words should be chosen at all times.

Highlighted Text

The best web content writers put important words in color or bold so that a reader can scan the text and find the information that they want easily and efficiently.

Brevity

Again, probably the most important, good web content writers are careful to only include the most important information because long, wordy paragraphs will turn off the reader and end up in little readership. The Internet is a place where information is found quickly with little effort spent. The best web content writers always say what they are trying to say using the fewest words possible."

400th post! Microsoft wants you to upgrade to Internet Explorer 8

About time, Microsoft is going to push IE8 out to users. I wish they would force corporate users to a minimum of IE7. We have a few clients (and I'm not talking about the little ones either!) that still refuse to move onto IE7 and it makes website development so hectic due to taking IE6 into account. IE6 needs to go away at this point, it initially launched in 2001, and the last big update was 5 years ago in 2004! Micrsoft should never have allowed IE7 upgrades to be optional.

What kills me about corporate users that don't upgrade is they're all about security, but for some reason when it comes to upgrading to a more secure browser, they still refuse! IT department heads that allow IE6 to exist really need to be relieved of their duties at this point, its an 8 year old browser they're allowing their employees to use.

Here's the article:
"If you are running a supported operating system and are still not on the recently launched Internet Explorer 8 edition, Microsoft would soon start bothering you with messages to update.

Microsoft has revealed that they would start sending notifications to such users through the Automate Update service included in these OS.

The good news is that the company would not force upgrade the Internet Explorer installations. It would be an opt-in setting for the time being.

Users on older operating systems like Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 would be delivered this message as a high priority update. " Read whole story here

Brand Aid Author Praises Johnson & Johnson for Uniting Branding and Technology

ConsultingMag.com just did an interview with Allen Adamson, managing director of Landor Associates and author of Brand Aid.

His main theme focuses around uniting brand experts and technology experts. I whole heartedly agree and I'm looking forward to reading the book.

In his interview with consultingmag.com, he praises Johnson & Johnson and their baby care division:

Most marketers are finally getting up to speed. I think Johnson & Johnson is doing some of it very well, particularly for their baby division. They have known for years that moms talking to each other are a key vehicle to getting their brand message into that marketplace. They have the [YouTube] baby channel, and they really created a whole platform for new moms to talk to each other.

The First Apple Mac Virus Rears its Ugly Head

IBotnet Virus: Apple's First Worm

Researchers are reporting the first Macintosh-specific worm to be found "in the wild" on the Internet, the IBotnet Virus. The good news is that, as far as worms go, this one seems to be a weakling.

Symantec guesses that only a couple of thousand machines have been infected. That being the case, it likely won't be of any practical value to cyber criminals, which are known to use networks of millions of PCs to perpetrate denial service attacks or send huge volumes of spam, for example.

The IBotnet virus is a Mac-specific Trojan Horse program that infects a machine only by downloading a pirated copy of iWork, the Apple productivity suite or Adobe Photoshop CS4. It does not spread from peer-to-peer on its own.

The finger is being pointed at BitTorrent, a popular site that enables users to share large files, as the avenue by which pirated copies were downloaded onto Mac computers.

Experts say iBotNet infects only a few thousand computers at most and is not a danger to the average Mac user. Some people won't even notice the effect of it.

"Quite frankly there is no functionality in this 'bot' that we have not seen before," Dave Marcus, head of research and communications at McAfee Avert Labs, said in a blog post. "The only thing of concern is that it affects the Mac platform, which certainly is fresh territory."

In a statement, Apple said it is working to prevent security problems.

"Apple takes security very seriously and has a great track record of addressing potential vulnerabilities before they can affect users," the statement says.

While the security experts probably won't come out and say it, this whole scare appears to be an elaborate to provide "conceptual truth" --ie: hackers attempting to put perceived snooty Mac users in their place by highlighting the fact that their (news flash) operating system of choice isn't so secure after all.

Physician rating sites, are they a good or bad idea

Ran into this article about rating doctors and if it should be done. My thought is that being a doctor, like any other small company owned by 4 people(such as Local Wisdom), is a representation of yourself. If Local Wisdom does bad work, and people rate it as such, it's a direct representation of the owners and I have no problems with people speaking their minds about bad experiences. All it does is allow me a way to open up dialog with the user to try to rectify the situation. I'd rather know what people are saying to others in an open forum that I can search and see for myself. Its a much better situation for the company when compared to people complaining about you and your company to others and you never get to hear about it. That situation will just destroy your credibility without giving you a chance to change people's opinions.

At the end of the day, being a doctor is a business and as such, rating it should not be a problem at is pushed away by doctors, but rather embraced. They need to step up and be represented by their work just like any other business (plus with the money they're making, why not!!!). Plus bad doctors need to be weeded out of the system, they can't just keep treating people badly and getting paid ridiculous amounts of money by the insurance companies.

Here's some of the article:

Forty plus sites offer rating systems for physicians and hospitals. Representative examples include: AngiesList.com; HealthGrades.com; RateMDs.com; Vimo.com and Qualitycheck.org (a site run by The Joint Commission). State medical societies also provide consumers information about physicians' malpractice and disciplinary action history. In addition to rating things like bedside manner, ability to make a timely appointment, staff courtesy, some sites also allow patients to provide their own commentary about their experience with the physician or hospital, much like a book or restaurant review. This comment feature is perhaps the most controversial.

Angry British villagers stop Google maps car

LONDON (AFP) – Angry residents of an English village blocked the driver of a Google Street View car who was filming the neighbourhood, saying they feared he would encourage burglaries, a report said Friday.

One resident, Paul Jacobs, told the BBC he had alerted his neighbours after spotting the car from his window in Broughton, Buckinghamshire, southern England, on Wednesday.

"I don't have a problem with Google wanting to promote villages. What I have a problem with is the invasion of privacy, taking pictures directly into the home," Jacobs said.

"We've already had three burglaries locally in the past six weeks. If our houses are plastered all over Google it's an invitation for more criminals to strike. I was determined to make a stand, so I called the police."

After his call, a police car arrived in Broughton to reports of a dispute between a crowd of people and a Google Street View contractor.

"They felt his presence was an intrusion of their privacy. When police arrived at the scene, the car had moved on," explained a spokeswoman for Thames Valley Police.

The Google Street View project, set up last month in Britain, aims to provide detailed 360-degree views online of streets all over Britain.

The project has already been strongly criticised by associations like Privacy International, a pressure group which has launched legal action against the IT company.

Google is confident their new mapping project is within the law.

"Before launching Street View we sought the guidance and approval of the Information Commissioner's Office. The ICO has repeatedly made clear that it believes that Street View includes the safeguards necessary to protect people's privacy," a Google spokesman said.

"The Metropolitan Police (in London) told us they saw no appreciable security risk, that burglars are opportunistic, and that mapping products can be useful in solving and mapping crime in an area."

He added: "Embarking on new projects, we sometimes encounter unexpected challenges, and Street View has been no exception."

Beware when ordering from Ebay with overseas merchants and Canada too :)

So I've got a story to tell. In December I went to ebay to order some ink cartridges for our Epson 1400 whose ink is $20 per cartridge and it requires 6 different color cartridges so for a full refill its $120. The printer itself only costs $250 as shown here . So being a shrewd (cheap...) business owner realizing that the ink costs more per volume then blood or oil, I decided to look online and see what kind of deal I could find so I wouldn't have to give my whole wallet over to Epson. Now don't get me wrong, the printer is great (if you use the epson presentation matte paper especially) and we use it for large 11X17 prints for our presentations. We love the quality and it gives our presentations a great canvas to lay on, but at $20 a cartridge, you've got to be kidding me!

Anyway, I found a vendor on ebay and placed the order as I've done in the past in my search for reasonablly priced ink and toner, not thinking anything of the fact that the vendor I ordered from is in Canada. We're allies with Canada so it should be safe to order from there right? Well I finally realize it's been over 2 weeks and I haven't recieved my ink, so I inquire through email what is going on and here's what I got back from the vendor:
Message from merchant:

Hi there, Finally I spoke to a customs officer in Seattle--- Epson complained about the cartridges that they are a copyright violation and customs is deciding whether to let them in or not. I'm so sorry for your order delay. and full refund was sent.

So the snag is hit and Epson doesn't allow it to come over the border. Fine, not a big deal, I'll just reorder from another vendor that is out in Cali and I don't run into the issue again. BTW, I was able to get 14 cartridges for $65 with shipping included, BAM take that Epson, IN YOUR FACE!

What I don't understand is that this vendor has shipped a bunch of these ink cartridges to the US (I know this because of the comments left by past clients), but I'm the one that get my shipment stopped by Epson and the US Customs and Border Protection. Later on I did get a letter from the Customs people stating what happened and that they wouldn't allow it over due to a complaint from Epson, which I read and promptly threw away. Now 4 months later, I just received the letter I scanned in below that shows a Seizure and Forfeiture Order that states "that seizure and forfeiture would result from any further attempt to import the article into the United States", AKA we're going to seize any ink you try to import into the US, MICHAEL ALFARO!!!

Overall, I find it funny that all this was caused just because I'm trying to get some cheap ink and not get ripped off by a big corporation. I feel like I've wasted a lot of people's time from the Customs guy that originally stopped and checked the original shipment to the person at the US International Trade Commissionn who printed and signed this letter, to the Fed Ex guy who had to deliver it. I would like to apologize to all those people for the original domino I pushed over that started this whole process. This has further confirmed my belief that the governnment and all it's departments have alot of people doing alot of unimportant things that could be reduced if Steve Jobs was brought in as a consultant and made it a lean, minimalistic, and over priced running machine :) Enjoy the letter, it's quite funny.

Lastly if you work for the government congrats and I hope your job actually does something useful, and if it doesn't congrats even more on getting lost in the shuffle...

Kodak Gallery, the end of free photo storage

Jason Fried spoke about not giving away your products anymore for free on the web, and here's the slow beginning of what I think we all fear, websites taking away their free services.

Kodak has sent me an email stating that if I don't pony up $4.99 of purchases through them each year, they'll remove the photo's I've uploaded to their site. I don't blame them, just scared of services I really use a lot going away from free....

Facebook's all over the place... that's a good thing

Dave Morin from Facebook just got everyone at SXSW all excited. Not only are over 6,000 websites already using Facebook connect. But its now available to the iPhone app developers and being used in desktop client form.

Facebook-ready apps include Playfish’s popular, Who Has the Biggest Brain? ($4.99 via iTunes), Tap Tap RevengeTap Tap Revenge reviewsTap Tap Revenge reviews 2 (free via iTunes), Movies by Flixster (free via iTunes), SGN’s Agency Wars (lite version free via iTunes), and Urbanspoon (free via iTunes). Now users can play against their Facebook friends, get a constant stream of the movies friends are watching, and are pretty much only limited by how developers envision and tweak the integration to fit with their apps.

For everyone that's unclear, on Facebook Connect. It's Faceboooks way of letting other websites use Facebooks authentication to let people signin using Facebook's login. So not only can your website have an easy login, but it can then make it easy for users to interact between your website and their Facebook.

Facebook Connect is the next evolution of Facebook Platform - enabling you to integrate the power of Facebook Platform into your own site. Enable your users to...

  • Seamlessly "connect" their Facebook account and information with your site
  • Connect and find their friends who also use your site
  • Share information and actions on your site with their friends on Facebook
The possibilities are outrageous.

Are Blogs Losing Their Authority To The Statusphere?

Depending on which numbers you source or believe, all reports agree that the blogosphere continues to expand globally.

As the leading blog directory and search engine, Technorati maintains a coveted Authority Index which is considered amongst bloggers as the benchmark for measuring their rank and selling their position within the blogosphere. Authority is defined as the number of blogs linking to a website in the last six months. The higher the number, the greater the level of Authority a blog earns.

However, a disruptive trend is already at play. While blogs are increasing in quantity, their authority—as currently measured by Technorati—is collectively losing influence.

In its annual State of the Blogosphere last year, Technorati revealed that it had indexed 133 million blog records since 2002. In March 2008, Universal McCann published a report that indicated 184 million blogs worldwide were created, with 346 million people reading blogs globally.

Indeed, consumers, businesses, content publishers, and media channels are embracing blogs as a way of engaging existing and reaching new readers to build an ecosystem around relevant conversations. It’s the convergence of dialog and journalism, creating a new generation of interconnectedness between publisher and community.

Blogging is entrenched in the mainstream. Continue Reading>>

Rutgers' $500 Million Economic Stimulus

As a Rutgers Alumni, I had to post this:

By Greg Trevor

Citing prudent fiscal policies and strong credit ratings, Rutgers is embarking on a $500 million capital construction program that will
create new academic and student facilities, while generating thousands of badly needed construction jobs across the state.

This construction program, which will fund more than 20 building projects on the university’s Camden, Newark and New Brunswick campuses, is projected to create 5,000 jobs through 2011, said Rutgers President Richard L. McCormick.

The projects that are part of this initiative will enhance services and academic opportunities for Rutgers students, while benefiting the regional economy,” McCormick said. “As the federal stimulus plan demonstrates, infrastructure improvements are an important way to create jobs and lay the foundation for long-term economic growth. On the state level, Rutgers University can play a similar role as an economic engine across New Jersey.”

The job projections were generated by Antonio Calcado, university vice president for facilities and capital planning; James W. Hughes,
dean of Rutgers’ Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy; and Joseph J. Seneca, university professor at the Bloustein
School.

Projects that are part of the university’s construction program include:
* $25 million for an Institute for Health Sciences on the New Brunswick Campus
* $12 million in renovations to the recreational center on the Camden Campus
* $5.4 million to construct additional research laboratories in the Life Sciences Center on the Newark Campus
* $55 million for a new Center for Integrative Proteomics Technologies facility on the Busch Campus in Piscataway
* 18.2 million to expand the Livingston Campus Student Center in Piscataway
* $60 million for deferred maintenance across the university
* $15 million for classroom improvements.

To help finance this initiative, the university successfully sold $233.1 million in general obligation bonds on February 10. The bonds
will be repaid through user fees and other university revenues. Prior to the bond sale, the nation’s two most respected bond-rating agencies reaffirmed Rutgers’ strong credit ratings – Aa3 from Moody’s Investors Service, AA from Standard & Poor’s.

In its rating report, Moody’s analysts wrote: “Rutgers’ position as the state’s . . . only comprehensive public research university will
continue to drive the excellent student demand and anchor state and private support for its academic, research, and public service
programs for the foreseeable future.”

Among Rutgers’ strengths cited by Moody’s: the recent transformation of undergraduate education on the New Brunswick Campus, a
significant rise in grant funding for research over the past decade, and record levels of applications from prospective students in
recent years.

Bruce C. Fehn, the university’s senior vice president for finance and administration, noted that approximately $100 million of the bonds
were sold to investors within New Jersey. “Even in these economically challenging times, it is reassuring to know that Rutgers
University is still considered a good investment by the people of New Jersey,” Fehn said.

This new construction program is on top of other job-creating projects that are under way or recently completed – such as the $102
million expansion of Rutgers Stadium, the $37 million construction of the new Rutgers School of Law building on the Camden Campus, and
$10.5 million to upgrade an electrical substation that is increasing power to the Busch and Livingston campuses in Piscataway.
Capital construction is one of many ways that Rutgers University directly benefits New Jersey residents and the state economy. Other
examples include:

* The Food Innovation Center in Bridgeton. Since its founding in 2001, this project of Rutgers’ New Jersey Agricultural Experiment
Station has provided business and technology expertise to more than 1,000 companies and entrepreneurs in each of the state’s 21
counties.

* Rutgers’ Office of Career Services, which will hold four public job fairs this year – connecting hundreds of employers with thousands
of job seekers from across New Jersey and beyond.

* Rutgers Against Hunger (RAH), a statewide initiative that aims to increase awareness of hunger and encourage community service to help those in need. The university is enlisting students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the concerned public in efforts to stock food banks; provide consumer education on nutrition; deliver technical and organizational support to community groups; and conduct research toward improving food production.

Blinds to Go Hiring For Tri-State Stores

Look who’s hiring:

Blinds To Go, Inc., Iselin, is looking to add 110 employees to its 22 New York, New Jersey and Connecticut area stores, the company recently
announced. The expansion is part of the company’s hiring goal of 400 additional store personnel this year for its retail
showrooms in the US and Canada. The company is North America’s largest manufacturer/retailer of window shades and blinds.

The hiring objective is prompted in part by the company’s plan to open 70 stores in the next five years. Because Blinds To Go
intensively trains staff prior to opening stores, it is aggressively looking for new employees to work at existing stores and feed the
pipeline of trained staff who will be ready for future store openings.

The majority of the new hires will be new or recent graduates of four-year colleges. Blinds To Go prides itself on a high level of
customer service delivered by well-trained salespeople, known as design consultants. The company actively recruits and participates in career fairs at colleges including Binghamton University, Hofstra University, Long Island University, Rutgers and William Patterson University. A strong promote-from-within commitment has led to an exceptionally low annual turnover rate of store managers of about 5-percent.

The new hires are also needed to reach optimum staffing levels at existing stores as well as create a pool of potential managers.
According to Nkere Udofia, vice chairman and head of US operations, “Sales are a direct function of a store’s staffing level - the more
staff, the higher the sales volume.”
At a time when the retail industry is hemorrhaging jobs, Blinds To Go, Inc., is bucking the trend. “We actually see the recession as an expansion opportunity. Because of our emphasis on training and development, we form really special relationships with our customers. That is something that really insulates us, to some extent, from what is happening in the general economy. Because our customers know us and have a relationship with us, if they need the product, they’ll still come back to us.”

Nielsen: Social Nets Overtake E-mail

As online paradigm shifts, advertisers must find a way to add value, rather than follow the 'push' model

NEW YORK Social networking has overtaken e-mail as the most popular Internet activity, according to a new study released by Nielsen.

Active reach in what Nielsen defines as "member communities" now exceeds e-mail participation by 67 percent to 65 percent. What's more, the reach of social networking and blogging venues is growing at twice the rate of other large drivers of Internet use such as portals, e-mail and search. Read More>>

Books

Crossing the Chasm
Author Geoffrey Moore makes the case that high-tech products require marketing strategies that differ from those in other industries. His chasm theory describes how high-tech products initially sell well, mainly to a technically literate customer base, but then hit a lull as marketing professionals try to cross the chasm to mainstream buyers. This pattern, says Moore, is unique to the high-tech industry.

Ironically, I must recommend that you read her every word so that you can find out why your customers won't read very many words on your website -- and what to do about it." -- Jakob Nielsen, Principal, Nielsen Norman Group

Whoa, Skittles.com is aactually a Twitter Search

So we're not the only one trying to let other people update our homepage (ok, that's coming soon).

Check out Skittles.com, if you can get past the annoying age verification or the floating ad banner like navigation. It is an interesting experience.

Distraction Free Writing

You might have heard of WriteRoom, a distraction free writing system. Its for people who enjoy the simplicity of a typewriter, but live in the digital world. WriteRoom is a full-screen writing environment for Mac. Unlike the cluttered word processors you're used to, WriteRoom is just about you and your text.

I became very intrigued by this program as writing requires focus on words while document editors add all these features that are great, but distract us from the words. I found myself being distracted by the font, the size, the decoration, orphan words, call caps, small caps, etc. I am a designer so yes, its inherent that documents are well designed. This leaves my brain exhausted. We all know that multitasking is great for computers, but sucky for humans.

Being that the screen is so minimal it might take a second or two longer to learn the software and the simple things like opening and saving files. But once you get the hang of it, its pretty nifty.

I do recommend WriteRoom for writers. With one caveat. It costs $25. I understand the brilliance of simplicity and whatnot, but $25 for a text editor? So I found JDarkRoom (thanks to robrohan.com). JDarkRoom is presty much the same application, build on Java and FREE.

This is probably part of a bigger topic of the trend of simple applications that have a price attached to them are being reprogrammed and offered for free. This makes your brand the only differentiator... but thats another post.

Enjoy.

Great podcast for managers or those being managed by managers

I stumbled upon ManagerTools.com a podcast show which covers quite a few how to's and best practices for managers.

What I really like about these is that they are not theory and hypothetical, they are very tactical and are full of stuff that you can use today. The only caveat, you'll have to get past the cheesy intro music.

Some of my favorites include

  • Feedback
  • Effective Meetings
  • Meeting Ground Rules
  • Effective Decision Making
  • Delegation

I didn't link to them because some have multiple parts.

Intranets are the latest rage

So whats the difference between talking with our customers and talking with our employees and collegues. Nothing really. Well, there shouldn't be, we are all humans. This is something talked about in the Clue Train Manifesto.

I digress, the point of this post is that there is a shift in the way we've been thinking about Intranet sites. Teams need to collaborate, communicate, and connect in ways that were never really needed. This year along we've seen a drastic increase in Intranet sites. From sites that organize information, to sites that allow community discusions, to sites that are highly interactive and motivational.

We're not the only ones who see this. Jakob Neilson talks about it in his latest alertbox titled, 10 Best Intranets of 2009.

Intranets are getting more strategic, with increased collaboration support. Team size is growing by 12% per year, and platforms are becoming integrated, with a strong showing for SharePoint. Improving usability increased use by 106% on average.

The winners of the award for 10 best-designed intranets for 2009 are:

  • Altran, a large engineering and innovation consultancy (France)
  • Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), a developer of computer and graphics processors (USA)
  • BASF SE, the world's leading chemical manufacturing company (Germany)
  • COWI Group A/S, a consulting group focusing on engineering, environmental science, and economics (Denmark)
  • Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu (DTT), a global professional services network providing audit, tax, consulting, and financial advisory services (a Global member organization)
  • Environmental Resource Management (ERM), one of the world's leading providers of environmental consulting services (Global)
  • HSBC Bank Brazil (Brazil)
  • Kaupthing Bank (Iceland)
  • L.L.Bean, a vendor of apparel and outdoor equipment (USA)
  • McKesson Corporation, a large provider of pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, and health care information technologies (USA)

The Local Wisdom Elevator Speech

Let's be honest. We're not sales people. We don't have a trained sales person. We are just people who are really really good at what we do. So how do we sell our services?

Today we had a vivid conversation about our elevator speech. Maria, Derrick, and Pinaki had the wonderful opportunity to be an exhibitor at a Johnson & Johnson tradeshow. This gave us the opportunity to practice our sales pitch.

We reviewed our thoughts with the team today and after talking about we came up with this.

Some General Rules

  • Limit your "UM"s to zero or less
  • Keep eye contact
  • Smile (this is big)
  • The objective is to get a follow up meeting
  • If they look bored switch the conversation and have them talk about themselves
  • Everyone sells with their own flavor
  • Adding detail makes what you say more concrete
  • Limiting words that make you sound unsure will help (words like: about, approximately, etc.)
  • Be sincere, you are talking to real people and not autonomous robots. If you don't mean it, don't say it.
  • Stay positive, we don't want anyone to associate something negative to you. "That's the girl who always complains about her workload"
Here are the major steps:

1. Connect with who you are talking to
Depending on the situation, you might want to start off with easy conversation that revolves around something you both share. Yes, the weather, sports, babies, food, travel, house work, are all easy conversations that we have everyday. We want to build a personal relationship with them as opposed to selling to them. We understand that no one likes to be sold to, people don't really like to be talked to either, people to LOVE being listened to.

2. Listen
The goal is to listen twice as much as talk. We've heard the adage, "... that's why God gave us two ears and one mouth". We want them to feel comfortable, secure, and in a trusted relationship.

3. The Local Wisdom Opening
Here we give them some context around who you are, what you do, who you work for, and what your company does. It works something like this:

Hi, I'm [your name here]
I work for Local Wisdom
We design, develop, and manage websites
I [brief explanation of your role]
What do you do?

4. Listen
Yes, we are listening again. Listen to what they do and open it up for discussion when they say something you can relate to. "Yes, I've faced that with IT." "Yes, getting everyone to agree is tough.", etc.

5. The Experience of Local Wisdom
So, not only do we design and develop websites, but we have some real experience to back it up. Here are some quick facts that always raise eyebrows:

  • We've been in business for 10 years
  • We've been working with Johnson & Johnson for 6 years
  • We've been managing JNJ.com for the last year
  • Other customers include global companies such as: Berlitz, ELS,
  • We have 21 employees (half are project-based and the other half are full time consultants managing a portfolio of websites and interactive communications)
  • We are always at arms reach, located in Somerset, NJ (only 5 minutes up the road from corporate)
6. Listen
Learn about their company.
Learn about their experience with websites.
Learn about how they update their websites.
Learn about how they feel about their website.
Learn about the last agency they've worked with

7. Closing
Now, you've reached the end of your conversation. One of you has to leave or is uninterested in continuing the conversation. If its the latter, please don't keep them tied to you, as you are wasting their time. If they are engaged and so are you, plan to meet up. Exchange business cards and let them know you will call them (and tell them when you plan on calling them).

So this is a work in progress. Please please comment and share your thoughts, critique, ideas, and experiences as you talk about us.

6 Tips To Effective Delegation

Greetings!:

As an executive, supervisor, manager or team leader, you make daily decisions about everyone's workload. Delegation is an excellent management tool to maximize your team's performance; however, it is a skill that needs to be learned. To help maximize your delegation skills, we have put together 6 tips and 5 core competencies to improve your delegation skills.

6 Tips To Effective Delegation:

1. Give The Person A Whole Task To Do - People prefer to get the job done and not wait for someone else to hand-off a component of it. Likewise, connect everyone who is actively working on the project so they can all see the big picture.

2. Make Sure They Understand Exactly What You Want Them To Do - Take the time to manage expectations so things are done correctly. Establish performance standards with SMART goals. That way, it is crystal clear what and how the task or project needs to be done.

3. Share Your Vision With Them - People like to know what your vision is on a project so share it with them. If they understand the big picture and how the task or project they are delegated fits into that big picture, they are more likely to be committed to it.

4. Set Project Due Dates - Most people need to know due dates so they can effectively manage a project. By setting specific dates and milestones you will help your team better manage a project that has been delegated to them.

5. Give Them The Right Tools - Make sure your team has the right tools to do the job. This can range from computers to software and everything in between.

6. Reward Your Team - Rewarding people for their individual and group performance is a great way to motivate them. Although financial consideration is great, best-in-class leaders find creative ways to reward their team.

Effective Delegation Can Strengthen Any Organization

Delegating tasks not only fosters a team environment but can help individuals increase their level of performance. Doing so, you will find individuals increasing their responsibility, leadership skills and project management skills. Plus, it's an excellent way for them to feel important to your organization.

The 5 Competencies To Help Maximize Your Delegation Skills Are:

1. Make Your Team Accountable - Leaders who delegate well demonstrate personal responsibility and hold everyone accountable for organizational outcomes.

2. Human Resource Management - Leaders who delegate well make sure there are resources available to meet the team's goals and objectives.

3. Solid Interpersonal Skills - Leaders who delegate well build solid relationships of trust and respect inside and outside the organization.

4. Leveraging Diversity - Leaders who delegate well find ways to leverage capabilities, insights and ideas across diverse cultures, styles and ability.

5. Strong Leadership - Leaders who delegate know how to enhance their organization's value, while tapping into their team's skills and abilities, to help achieve the desired results.

SUMMARY - Effective delegation is all about sharing the workload, with the added bonus of developing skills and responsibility in others. A leader not only needs to look at the "final result" but also who worked, who didn't work and what they should do differently next time. The 6 tips and the 5 competencies above will not only help you achieve a work-life balance but also become more productive.

"Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity."
--General George Smith Patton, Jr.

Coating helps solar panels soak up more of the sun

A new type of reflective coating can make solar panels far more efficient, soaking up nearly all available sunlight from nearly any angle, U.S. researchers said on Monday.

Current solar panels -- which convert energy from the sun into electricity -- absorb only about two-thirds of available sunlight.

But surfaces treated with a coating developed at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, can harvest 96.2 percent of sunlight.

"That is a tremendous savings," Rensselaer's Shawn-Yu Lin, whose study appears in the journal Optics Letters, said in a telephone interview.

Lin said the technology addresses two main problems in current solar cells. It captures more colors of solar spectrum and it captures light from all angles.

"If you look at a solar panel, it looks a bit bluish," Lin said. That is "telling you not all of the blue color is being absorbed. It should look totally dark."

The other problem is that solar panels work best when sun shines directly on them. To solve this, large solar arrays mechanically shift position throughout the day -- much like sunbathers on a beach.

Lin and colleagues think they have found a better solution. Their coating is made up of seven layers of porous material stacked in such a way that each enhances the antireflective properties of the layer below.

Together they act as a buffer zone, trapping light from all angles. "Your efficiency increases by 30 percent," Lin said.

He thinks the material could be applied to all types of solar cells.
"It's not going to require many added instruments too adopted this technology," he said.

6 Tips For Completing An Intimidating Project

Great article by Anita Zinsmeister, President of Dale Carnegie Training of Central & Southern NJ.

Greetings!:

One of our clients was given the opportunity to head up a complex and high visibility project.  Although he was excited about the opportunity he also found it daunting.  He found himself not sure of which way to turn to get the project started and how to execute it most efficiently or productively.

Many people let fear get in the way of progressing in at least one area of their lives.  Don't let fear of an intimidating project at work cripple your chance to get ahead at the workplace and take on additional responsibilities. Tackle that project head on and everyone will be better off.  We've put together a list of tips to make this easier for you.

The 6 Tips For Completing An Intimidating Project Are:

Tip # 1. Make Sure You Are Organized - If you are not organized you will find yourself  floundering, making the project seem more difficult than it is.  Create a list of things that need to be done in order to bring your project to completion.  Organize the list by what needs to be done first as well as order of difficulty.

Tip #2. Get Started Now - Look at the task list you created and decide whether you want to tackle the most difficult parts first or just get the easy parts over with.  This will help you start momentum on the project.  Looking at a large project in smaller steps will help you get over your fear of a "huge" project.  Prioritizing what is most important and needs to be done first can give you a sense of self direction.

Tip #3. Set Deadlines - Set appropriate deadlines for milestones in the project (hourly, daily or weekly).  Check your progress against your deadlines at least once a day to be sure you are on track.  Make adjustments if necessary and continue on your path.  Don't allow yourself to get flustered if you get stuck on something - move on and come back to that part later with fresh eyes.

Tip #4. Take Breaks To Keep Yourself Working At Peak Performance - If you are tired or hungry your productivity will slow down immensely.  Do yourself a favor and schedule in lunch and snack breaks and do not skip them.  Invest a few minutes to take a short walk or get some fresh air.  It can invigorate you.  If the project is being completed over the span of a few days, choose a time to leave work for the day and stick with it. Overworking yourself is not an efficient way to get your project completed.

Tip #5. Ask For Help If Necessary - If you get stuck on something, ask for help or feedback from your co-workers.  This will help give you another perspective on something you may have overlooked.  If the project is truly more than you can handle or you are falling behind on deadlines, see if you can delegate parts of the project to others.  Further increase efficiency by matching each task to the person who is most likely to do the best job on that particular item.

Tip #6. Step Back And Review - When you are finished, or almost finished, step back and review the whole project.  Doing this will enable you to correct any mistakes and will help you be sure that the project is cohesive.  The completed version of the smaller tasks that you broke the project into needs to fit together well.

Summary - These tips will help you stay on track to complete any large project in a timely manner.  Don't let fear get the better of you at work - take a logical approach to breaking a project down into manageable pieces and you will reap the rewards.

SugarSync is an app that seamlessly syncs files

SugarSync is an online tool that can sync folders over multiple
computers. It's been hailed by our good friend Jakob Neilson as one of
the most usable app interfaces of 2008.

I'm thinking that we can use this to sync our project files aka
LW_Projects folder.

Me thinks it would work better than MS Groove because of those of us
who own Macs.

I'll do some research and see what's up.

Jason Fried - Things We’ve Learned at 37Signals

Got this off of twitter from a Kevin Rose Tweet http://kevinrose.com/

This is a great read, from a guy at 37Signals discussing projects at the Web 2.0 conference, link at bottom, here's a preview:

Going to range from collaboration to design, hiring, lots of things without diving into too much detail. 20-25 minutes of talking and then Q&A.

1. Momentum - Has its hands in just about everything and is incredibly important. Esp for morale. Most typical projects are really exciting at the beginning and then people tend to lose interest and fade out. Long projects eat at you and you’re not even looking to do good stuff you just want to finish things and they don’t turn out well. Create a situation where projects are short and there’s excitement and it’s a short 2 week project and it leaves people in excited mode. Break big projects into as many small projects. 2 week rule.

Another reason to stop using or developing sites for IE6

If we keep making sites that look good in IE6 people have no real reason to upgrade, so let's stop!!! I'm just putting this up since alot a research was recently put into this for a new client site, so might as well not lose it!

Versions of Internet Explorer up to and including 6 do not support native alpha-channel transparency such as when PNG files are used for shadow effects . But various JavaScript fixes exist for clients using IE 5.5 to 6:

Proposal may ease cancellation fees for cell phone users

The government is quietly negotiating to help cell phone customers avoid expensive fees when they cancel contracts with wireless companies, The Associated Press has learned.

Cell phone companies routinely charge customers $175 or more for quitting their service early. Under a proposal to the Federal Communications Commission, the wireless industry would give consumers the opportunity to cancel service without any penalty for up to 30 days after they sign a cell phone contract or until 10 days after they receive their first bill. The proposal also would cap such fees and reduce them month by month over the course of a contract based on how long customers have left, according to people familiar with the offer speaking on condition of anonymity because the FCC has not accepted it. The plan would not abolish cancellation fees entirely.

Water Proof your phone and electronics!!!

From the website:

Golden Shellback coating has an excellent ability to repel oils, synthetic fluids, hazardous materials, dust, dirt and water based solutions. Low surface tension values, such as water and oils will bead and drain freely from coated surfaces. The process produces a uniform, continuous, near hermetic coating that resists rain and humidity. Electronics casually exposed to water continue to work even after exposure. The coating is readily applied and not generally considered to be removable. Repairs are made using abrasive methods.

The 10 Tips For Great Leadership

The 10 Tips For Great Leadership
1. Understand What Everyone Does: You don't need to be an expert at everyone's job, but you do need to know what they do on a daily basis. As a result of gaining this understanding, you'll have a greater respect for what challenges they face. Conversely, if they see you taking an interest in what they do, they will increase their respect for you.

2. Don't Do Your Staff's Work: All too many times we see people who have been promoted to a leadership position doing the work of others to get things done. Although your expertise and skills may be better than your staff's, you need to help them grow by making their own mistakes. A good leader knows the difference between teaching and doing.

3. Get To Know Your Business: Great leaders must understand how their people support the overall business goals. We suggest sitting down with other departments to develop and open lines of communication and examine overall processes to see how they can be improved for the greater good of the organization.

4. Your Communication Needs To Be Open And Honest: One of the biggest barriers between management and workers is lack of communication. Information should flow freely and easily between management and staff. We often advise our clients to communicate consistently because what seems irrelevant to you may be highly relevant to someone else (we also suggest rewarding people who are proactive in sharing information). Additionally, teamwork will stimulate your staff's communication.

5. Create A Team Environment: Everyone knows that strong teamwork creates a more proactive and efficient operation. As a leader, encourage cross-department meetings with a set agenda and time frame to help remove any "I am an island" type mentality. You can also reward staff members who are proactive and create a collaborative atmosphere.

6. Let Your Employees Know What You Want: Often times people work on projects that isolate them from the overall vision of an organization. Because of this, many people don't know what they are doing well and what needs improvement. To help augment a positive relationship, be proactive in casual conversations and formal performance reviews. Also, praise your staff when they do things correctly and effectively. Conversely, if someone isn't living up to defined standards, let them know sooner vs. later.

7. Hire Good People: Over the years I have learned many lessons about hiring people. All I can say is that poor performing people can cost your business a small fortune. First and foremost, you should ask yourself if this person will fit well with the team. We often suggest getting your staff involved in the hiring process (when it's appropriate) so they can add their thoughts about possible candidates; however, you need to tell them what their role is in the process and let them know their opinion is valued.

8. Spend Time (And Money) Developing Your People: Business is constantly changing. That being said, many people need to learn new things and improve their skill set(s) to meet the changing business requirements. Learning can be a fun and challenging part of their job; therefore, it is recommended to budget some dollars for training and development and encourage your staff to attend training whenever possible.

9. Apply Good Leadership Skills: Most every leader we've met wants to be a positive role model and solid leader for their people. To ensure that your goal becomes a reality, we often suggest looking at your skills daily by asking yourself how you could have done a better job or looked at projects differently.

10. Become Better At Project Management: Surprisingly, most projects don't fail because the project itself was bad. Most fail due to weak project management skills or senior management's lack of support. If you haven't had any formal project management training, find and invest in a good program.

5 Competencies For Being A Great Leader

1. Vision: Great leaders always have an eye on the future. They also have the ability to project to their team an exciting picture of what could and what should be, regardless of how things are in their present state.

2. Results-Oriented: Great leaders are passionate about winning but are truly dedicated to achieving all-win solutions for everyone involved.

3. Decision Making: Great leaders ensure they have all the facts and completely understand their options by weighing all the risks. They also objectively prioritize alternatives that result in decisive action.

4. Management Controls: Great leaders exercise the necessary "management controls" to ensure the integrity of the organization's processes are being followed.

5. Motivations: Great leaders drive business results by aligning the vision, mission, and values to enhance the organization's value. They are also able to enlist the willing cooperation of others while tapping into their highest skills and abilities to achieve desired results.

Summary: Great leaders are challenged with balancing many priorities. You need to have not only a vision for the future but a plan that outlines how you'll get there. Once this is done, it needs to be clearly communicated to everyone so they can prioritize their steps to achieve the group's goals.

Choosing the right projects

Choose whether or not to take on a project can be a daunting and stressful situation. One, that is can be fraught with inner and team conflict and tons of passion and emotion.

We tackle these situations by asking ourselves some fundamental questions.

Can we learn from this project?
Can we work well with these clients?
Is there enough $$$?
Will this bring further opportunities?
Can we do this project?
Is this project interesting to us?
How busy are we at this point?
If we answer "yes" to more than 75% of these questions, we take it.

When to call your sales prospect

Dominic a Sales Training from Ultimate Sales Tips writes a great article entitled When's the best time to call a Prospect.

In a nutshell he says,

I call at odd hours. By that I mean, hours when I'm most likely to catch the boss, but not the staff who usually get in my way. That means early in the morning, late in the evening, and even on weekends.

Now that we have cellphones, this is embarrasingly easy to do.

Start off with a quick opening like, "I'm glad I caught you. I need to talk to you about something really important. There's a huge benefit for you, but we keep missing each other during the week."

If someone showed you that kind of commitment, wouldn't you meet them?

What's the difference between producing a great website and building great teamwork

It's becoming more and more apparent to me that the world of creating websites is
not a technological endeavor or a design endeavor; instead, I'd like to think of it as a people endeavor.

Without the specific skills of inspiring, leading, and motivating a team with the purpose of producing a top-notch website, we cannot achieve a top-notch website. If the team is continually building on the strengths of the individual team members, and building structure and efficiency in its processes, it will achieve greater and greater success.

Here is some key information that I've recently learned about teamwork:

Creating a Common Purpose: Building teamwork begins with building a shared sense of common purpose. This strengthens the team by establishing direction which leads to more effective decision making, better problem-solving, enhanced ability to work through problems, and clearer communication. Without knowing where you are going, any road will get you there. Ask yourself, What is the team purpose.

Defining Individual Purposes: Understanding the overall purpose and the purpose of the individual members of your team will enable each individual to understand her/his role in the team as well as to value that role as a fundamental component of achieving the common purpose. If everyone doesn't know their role, the chain will weaken. Ask everyone, what is your purpose and why is it critical.

Approaching Situations: Answering the "how" question before getting into the work will help align the team members responsibilities and create greater efficiencies. Each team memeber will have their own way of solving the problem and if the "how" discussion doesn't happen then individuals will begin working on the solution before concentrating on working as a team.

Establishing a Team Vision: Using words in the present-tense to describe your team's situation in the future is a powerful way to inspire the team to live up to the common purpose. Describe your vision for your team by setting a date in the future and establishing what will be the state of affairs on that date. Make sure you are positive, powerful, and writing in the present tense.
Making it a Process: Taking your processes through the 6 sigma process development steps will help to constantly improve them. The steps include: Design, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control.

Rinse and Repeat: Change management is always a stressful situation for everyone. Team members will flow through the four stages of change: uncertainty, anxiety, clarity, and consistency. As long as the leader stays consistent with her/his actions, the team will follow suite.

Here is an inspirational video regarding teamwork. The Power of Teamwork.

Getting into the Business of Social

So yesterday at our Council of Wisdom meeting we talked about creating the first Local Wisdom blog. Everyone's been talking about and it makes sense for so many reasons.

Don't get it wrong, we know and understand blogs, from design, development, to business policy. This is why our customers come to us for solutions involving community driven solutions.

As you know the shoemakers kids and all... so here we are at the meeting and we challenged ourselves to stop talking and just start blogging. Forget the research, marketing plans, objectives, and all those other things that take time. We push innovation by being organically smart.

So what are we doing here? (heh, good question)

1. In our business we come across oodles of information that helps us be the best... we should share that.

2. We have a culture at Local Wisdom and we believe that culture is what will drive us to great heights. This blog is the vestibule for that culture.

3. We like to have fun. Why do business if we can't smile while doing it?

So there you have it.

Hope you enjoy it, feel free to add a comment or shoot me an email.

Sincerely,

Pinaki
